Real Products, Real Yards, Real Seasons
Anyone can rewrite a spec sheet. Our goal is different: we test yard, garden, and outdoor products the way you’d actually use them — assembled in a real backyard, run through real weather, and judged on whether they hold up over time, not just on day one.
Our Testing Process
1. Research & Shortlisting
Before we test anything, we research the category — comparing specs, reading owner feedback, and identifying which models are actually worth the time to test hands-on versus which are minor variations of the same product.
2. Hands-On Testing
Where possible, we assemble, install, and use products ourselves. That means:
- Raised beds & container gardens — assembled, filled, and grown in for at least one full season to check drainage, material durability, and how they hold up through heat and rain.
- Robotic mowers — tested on real lawns, checking slope handling, obstacle avoidance, cutting quality, and how the app actually performs versus what’s advertised.
- Smart irrigation controllers — installed and run through multiple watering cycles, checking app reliability, weather-adjustment accuracy, and real water savings.
- Outdoor furniture & patio sets — assessed for material quality, weather resistance, and comfort, with attention to how well cushions and frames hold up outdoors.
- Rainwater harvesting systems — evaluated for capacity, filtration, and ease of setup relative to typical household water use.
3. Comparison Against Alternatives
We don’t test products in isolation. Every review considers how a product stacks up against its direct competitors on price, durability, and real-world performance — not just against its own marketing claims.
4. Ongoing Re-Checks
Products change. Manufacturers update models, prices shift, and sometimes quality changes between production runs. We periodically revisit our reviews and update them when something material changes.
What We Rate
Every review we publish considers:
- Durability — Does it hold up through a full season or multiple seasons of real use?
- Value — Is the price justified by what you actually get?
- Ease of Setup — How much time and skill does it realistically take to install or assemble?
- Real-World Performance — Does it do what it claims on an actual lawn, garden, or patio — not just in ideal test conditions?
Our Rating Scale
We use a simple 5-leaf rating system across every review, reflecting our overall assessment of a product’s durability, value, and real-world performance.
What We Don’t Do
- We don’t accept payment in exchange for a positive review.
- We don’t publish a review for a product we haven’t researched, tested, or thoroughly vetted.
- We don’t hide a product’s downsides just because it’s an affiliate partner.
Some of our links are affiliate links — see our Affiliate Disclosure for full details — but the commission structure never determines what we recommend.
